Many individuals who are at a healthy weight for their body stature still struggle with an excessively full neck or the appearance of a “double chin.” Frustratingly, fatty deposits commonly accumulate around the neckline as a result of genetics, weight gain, or a redistribution of subcutaneous fat from the natural aging process. The aesthetic result of these body changes is often an undefined neck profile, emphasized signs of aging, or the appearance of weight gain. When excess neck fat does not subside through diet or exercise, it can mask the youthful contours of the chin, neck, and jawline. While targeting this fat through natural remedies can prove difficult, aesthetic plastic surgeon Geoffrey Leber, MD, FACS offers liposuction of the neck to help patients achieve definition under the chin and around the neckline for a younger-looking, more contoured cosmetic result.

What Can Neck Liposuction Do for Me?
Neck liposuction is designed to eliminate isolated pockets of fat under the chin and around the neckline to allow a slimmer facial profile and make the youthful angles of the neck more visible. The procedure utilizes very thin cannulas to gently suction out fatty deposits, a technique that can minimize discomfort and recovery time when compared to other surgical enhancement procedures. Depending on your cosmetic goals, neck liposuction can achieve the following:
- Diminished look of a “double chin” or exaggerated fullness along the neckline
- More refined jaw and neckline
- Younger-looking aesthetic in the neck
Localized areas of fat accumulation are not reserved to the neck region. Patients concerned with stubborn fat pockets elsewhere on the body also have the option of undergoing liposuction in additional body areas, including the abdomen, thighs, flanks, and others. Our plastic surgeon can talk with you about your goals and explore all available options with you during the initial consultation.
How is Neck Liposuction Performed?
Liposuction in the neck utilizes small incisions that are discreetly placed under the chin or behind the ear. A narrow surgical instrument, called a cannula, is inserted directly into targeted fatty deposits on the neckline for precise neck contouring. As the cannula loosens fat cells, excess fat is extracted with a gentle suction device, revealing a more defined chin and jawline. Depending on a patient’s customized surgical plan, neck liposuction can take an hour or less to complete. It is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and uses local anesthesia and sedation, or general anesthesia.
Who is a Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Neck liposuction is most successful for individuals at or near their ideal body weight who have good skin elasticity. Because the procedure is not designed to remove excess skin, a patient’s skin must have the ability to tighten and contract after fatty deposits are removed. Liposuction in the neck generally benefits men and women with one or more of the following cosmetic concerns:
- Excess fatty deposits along the neckline
- The appearance of a “double chin”
- Reduced jawline definition
- Horizontal creases in the neck and other signs of aging
Ideal candidates for the procedure are in good overall health and have realistic expectations for the surgical outcome. Patients with poor skin elasticity, or an aggregate of loose skin that may form a “turkey neck” appearance, may be better served with a neck lift or mini facelift. These procedures can allow the removal of subplatysmal fat, as well as the repositioning and excision of lax neck and facial tissues for a rejuvenated appearance. During the consultation process, Dr. Leber will carefully examine your neckline and other aesthetic concerns. After assessing your medical history and reasons for surgery, he can formulate a treatment plan designed to help you reach your cosmetic ideal.

What is Recovery Like for Neck Liposuction?
Following surgery, many patients are surprised at the relative ease of the recovery process. While mild bruising and swelling may occur, any discomfort experienced during this time can be managed with oral pain medication. A compression garment will be worn for the first few days after the procedure to promote the body’s natural healing process. Depending on each individual’s unique rate of healing, a full return to work and daily activities can be made within one to two weeks.
The results of neck liposuction are usually immediate and typically improve as swelling subsides. Patients can notice a more youthful and contoured appearance in the neck, as well as a visible distinction between the neck and chin that may not have existed previously. For many individuals, the final outcome can last anywhere from five to ten years as long as a healthy lifestyle is maintained. Touch-up treatments can also be pursued upon patient preference.
