Perioral Dermabrasion is used for perioral rejuvenation to improve the look and appearance of the mouth and/or lips. As we age we tend to lose volume (Fat and Collagen) around our mouth and lips contributing the appearance of perioral wrinkles (rhytids). Other factors that can add to this are smoking, prolonged sun exposure and dry climates.
One of the most effective ways to rejuvenate the skin around the mouth is with perioral dermabrasion. This utilizes a high-speed diamond wheel dermabrader which mechanically sands the peaks of the wrinkles down to the valleys. As the tissues heal, new thicker dermis is formed which gives the skin a more youthful appearance without the wrinkles. The border of the lip becomes more defined and “lip stick bleeding” into the fine lines no longer occurs. Additionally, the pore size is reduced and the lip appears shorter with a slight eversion of the border of the lip. This makes the lips look fuller and more youthful.
Dermabrasion has a long history of success in the treatment of wrinkles and scars around the mouth. It is very predictable has less chance of causing hypopigmentation than aggressive lasers. This procedure can be done under local anesthesia utilizing a dental block to numb the upper and lower lips. It takes minutes to perform and produces amazing and long lasting results. This procedure can be done alone or in conjunction with facial fat grafting, eyelid surgery and/or a facelift. To find out if you are a candidate for this procedure please contact our office for a consultation with Dr. Leber.
Dr. Leber commented on the positive effects of perioral dermabrasion which was published in the highly respected Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (Volume 107, number 7, June 2001, page # 1917).
