A broken nose can be incredibly jarring to experience, particularly since this injury commonly results from a fall, a sports accident, or a sudden blow to the face. Not all fractures in the nose require surgical treatment, but breaks that warrant medical attention should generally be examined within 14 days of the accident. We understand it can be difficult to determine whether you should go to the doctor after a nasal injury, which is why Boston plastic surgeon Geoffrey Leber, MD has offered some guidance in the event of a broken or damaged nose:
- Minor fractures may not necessitate any treatment: If your appearance or your ability to breathe hasn’t been impacted by your injury, there’s generally no need for manual realignment or plastic surgery. Apply ice to your face immediately and consult with your primary care provider for further guidance and at-home remedies to help your nose heal.
- Damaged bones and cartilage may be repaired with in-office treatment: In some cases, your doctor can physically straighten your nasal framework during a procedure called manual realignment. This is conducted in-office under medications, and must be completed within two weeks of the nose break.
- Severe fractures can be addressed with Rhinoplasty: For patients who have a crooked or misshapen nose after their injury, or individuals who cannot breathe as well following their fracture, rhinoplasty offers a highly effective solution to recontour your nose. Rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nose surgery, can reposition/resize the nasal bones, tissue, and cartilage to repair damage and create greater facial harmony. A crooked or deviated septum can also be straightened during the procedure to restore breathing function, if necessary.
An injury to the nose can be troubling, but rest assured that our medical team can help you determine the best course of action to restore full form and function.
